Naming Your Wigs…..

It always makes me feel chirpy when I read the names of the wigs that arrive at the Wig Centre. Each of them has their own personal ladies name, chosen by the manufacturer, and I love how the name gives the wig it’s own personality! This week I have been working with the likes of Lilly, Mara and Belinda and having a name, I often find myself chattering away to them in the wig room as I’m styling them!

This is not the first time I have worked with wigs that have names given to them, it is a commonly done thing in the theatre that if an actor has more than one wig to wear during the show, and different characters to play, not only do their different characters have different names, but their wigs do too! Always girls names – I guess because it is mostly girls wearing the wigs in the shows! They are always referred to as she, “ooh she’s looking lovely today” is a common phrase in wig rooms across the west end, or, “she feels a bit tight can we move that pin?!”

One of my good actor friends, Lori Barker, is particularly known for this among the wiggies that she works with. She takes it to new levels, creating personalities and moods for each of her characters, daily, depending on the feel of the wig and really uses them to get into character. The finishing touch to her look during quick changes was always the wigs when we worked together on Legally Blonde, and this final element is what helped her to find her characters quickly, during these super fast changes between scenes, usually in the wings and with barely seconds to spare most of the time!

She had a long sleek wig that was worn for the scenes where she played one of the Delta New Sorority girls, and she named this one Paris. Classy and cute! She played the judge, during the trial scenes and this wig was a quaffed curly late 80s inspired style, named Judy! There was a crazy purple and black, twisted and spiky style worn when she played receptionist in the Hair Affair Salon, this one was named Shaznay, quirky and fun! Her Harvard Student wig was named Hillary, her character was serious and studious and her convict wig for the ladies prison was called Candice, she was energetic and feisty, for the skipping scene. Every day she would speak to them like they were old friends and she really loved them all and took care of them.

Naming your wig often gives you a real sense of personal connection to it and hopefully doing this while you are going through hair loss, may give you some comfort in difficult times. We try to bring an uplifting outlook to wearing your wig here at Essex Wig Centre and this is just one of the little things, a little tip for wigs, that always makes me smile. I hope that you can enjoy wearing your wig, for whatever reason you need it and aim to make the whole experience as happy as possible for all of my clients and their individual needs.

Come in and see me soon! I’m always happy to help on the phone for any questions you may have too. Call the centre on 08001223043 or email me on Sam.essexwigcentre@gmail.com

I’m happy to say that we finally managed to see Vera this week, our client after the bright coloured pink and purple wigs that I was working on a few weeks ago. Unfortunately her health had taken a turn for the worst following the beginning of her treatment, which had delayed her return to collect her wigs. While having a moment of relief from it, she was able to get in to see us and we were wowed by the results! The styles suited her really well and the cuts, tho in crazy colours, are going to be wearable which was the whole aim of this project. The vibrant pinks and purples fit wonderfully with Vera’s personality and wardrobe! Complimenting her famous rainbow gilet, setting her apart from the rest and helping her truly stand out from the crowd.

At the grand age of 79, I love her attitude and outlook on the whole experience and find her truly inspiring. When faced with hair loss of any sort, it is very easy to forever be worrying about what other people think and how other people see you, but with Vera’s attitude of, I shall wear what I want to wear and look how I want to look and the celebration of colour and style that she has chosen to go with, she shows us that actually this should not be about anyone else at all. Is is about you. The individual and how you feel about yourself. Anything that helps you to get through these times and make you feel better, grab on to it and do it for you. If you want to look how you always have, that is totally possible with our range of natural styles that we can tailor to you, if you want to embrace a change, then go for it! Anything is possible, have the hair you have always wanted. And if you want to have fun and go wild with it, then pinks and purples and any colour of the rainbow are also available to create your own individual style.

Delighted with the result, Sam entered into the spirit, the fun and the joy of this enterprise. She worked extremely hard to achieve this outcome and I very much appreciate this. Vera x

Thank you Vera, we are very happy to have helped!

Wedding of the Year

Hey guys, So this week has been another very different project for the wig centre… Those of you who have read about me on the website, or worked with me before, will know that a lot of my background is in makeup, and creative hair, mainly in Theatre and weddings, and this week, I worked on a beautiful wedding in Warwick of two good friends of mine, providing hair and makeup for the bride, mother of the bride and two of the six bridesmaids – of which I was one! The bride was after luscious, long locks and though she has quite long hair of her own, we used one of the Biya hair pieces available from the Essex Wig Centre to give extra volume and length and a really creative style. The wedding was on Monday and on the Friday before, I coloured Sarah’s hair to match and blend with her piece. The wedding had a dark plumb colour scheme and her hair colour blended with this perfectly! I was then able to style the hairpiece before the event too, putting in a sculpted beehive and preparing braids to be wound through the style, and curling the loose hair into a medium wave, for the long flowing style at the back.

Sarah was keen to have quite a heavy makeup as she didn’t want to just feel how she feels on a night out, she wanted extra special and rightly so! I use mainly Bare Minerals products, some MAC and some Dior, but the Bare Minerals foundation especially gives such a flawless finish, and with the addition of the mineral veil, it lasts all day. Perfect for bridal makeup that needs to stay flawless all day.

In the morning before we left for the venue, I set Sarah’s hair in heated rollers at the front, ready for the waved style we had in mind for the front, and pin curled the rest, ready to attach her 3/4 wig piece. I pinned the piece in securely, then styled the front hair into the piece and finished off by entwining the braids into the style.

For the evening reception, sarah had got quite warn during the day and wanted to have her hair up. So I quickly styled the hair into a chignon at the back and pinned it up. I then wove in some diamanté pins to match in with the bridesmaids.

I styled my own hair by setting the whole lot in blow dry rollers in the morning, to create height and volume, then used a hair piece that I made for myself, wound into a curly chignon, and pinned this in on the side, for a simple but pretty up do. Again I was wearing Bare Minerals foundation and eye colours, with MAC and Dior products in there too.

Mother of the bride and the other bridesmaid, were completely wearing Bare Minerals.

It was a beautiful day, we had such fun. And I got to exercise my makeup and creative styling skills which was very enjoyable. Professional photos by Roxpix Photography.

Congratulations Sarah and Rob! Thank you for letting me be part of your big day!
